European Romanesque ecclesiastical context (unidentified)
The Romanesque Figural Capital with Interlaced Harpies and Chevron Archivolts
2145
High Romanesque Period (c. 1130–1150)
A structural sandstone column capital featuring carved winged harpy figures whose wings and tails terminate in curling palmettes merging with foliate elements, framed by prominently chevron-carved archivolts. The capital isolates organic figural forms while the surrounding stonework multiplies the same chevron angle indefinitely, making visible the two registers — figural singularity and geometric iteration — in which Romanesque ornament simultaneously operates.
