Romanesque Arcade with Figural Capitals and Spandrel Vine Scrolls

2494

Created in the Early to High Romanesque period (circa 1010–1033 CE / late 12th-century secondary integration), reflecting the Ottonian architectural campaign under Bishop Bernward of Hildesheim alongside subsequent Romanesque stonecarving developments.

This image captures an interior architectural elevation showing a multi-bay arcade supported by monolithic columns topped with sculpted figural and foliate capitals, surmounted by heavy impost blocks and rich spandrel bands filled with scrolling vegetation. It is carved from fine-grained limestone and sandstone, executed using deep chisel cutting, drillwork (sottosquadro) for sharp shadow definition, and high-relief stone modeling.
