Roman Archaistic Marble Head of Athena

3103

Date Created: Circa 27 BCE – 68 CE (Early Roman Imperial period, spanning the reigns of Augustus to Nero). Period: The Early Roman Empire / Julio-Claudian Dynasty (with a strong stylistic revival of Archaistic Art, which originated in the late Hellenistic period around the second century BCE and continued under Roman rule).

Decorative and Votive Sculpture for Elite Roman Interiors: Functionally, such archaistic sculptures catered to the sophisticated Roman elite who decorated their luxurious villas, gardens, and public buildings with works celebrating the high-prestige art of classical and archaic Greece. Cultural Prestige and Classicizing Ideology: The statue served to project the patron’s Hellenic education (paideia), refined taste, and alignment with the cultural golden age of classical antiquity.
