Turkey (Göreme, Cappadocia)
Rock-Cut Mural and Geometric Ornament of the Göreme Open-Air Museum
2467
Created over 1,000 years ago, roughly in the 10th to 11th century CE. Period: Middle Byzantine Period / Monastic Phase (circa 900–1050 CE).
This image captures an architectural interior fragment of rock-cut vaults, domes, and arches adorned with red pigment murals. It is crafted from natural volcanic tufa rock carved into architecture and painted directly with red pigment (red ochre), executed using a direct freehand lime-painting technique applied onto the carved cave surfaces.
