Rock-Cut Mural and Geometric Ornament of the Göreme Open-Air Museum

2468

Created roughly in the 10th to 11th century CE (over 1,000 years old). Period: Middle Byzantine Period / Iconoclastic or Early Post-Iconoclastic Monastic Phase (circa 900–1050 CE).

This image captures an architectural interior fragment of rock-cut vaults, arches, and piers adorned with red pigment murals. It is crafted from natural volcanic tufa rock (soft tufa stone carved into architecture) painted directly with red ochre pigment suspended in lime wash or water-based binder, executed using a direct freehand fresco-secco or lime-painting technique applied onto the carved cave surfaces.
