Rochester Cathedral: Great West Door Portal
2503
Created circa 1150 CE, mid-12th century, Anglo-Norman Romanesque period.
This image captures the intricate concentric archivolts, semicircular tympanum, lintel, and jamb shafts of the cathedral's west portal. The tympanum depicts Christ in Majesty within a full-body aureole supported by angels, surrounded by the symbols of the Four Evangelists, with the Twelve Apostles on the lintel below. It is carved from Kentish ragstone and local limestone, executed using high-relief figural sculpture, geometric chevron and roll molding, and deep chisel undercutting.
