Georgia (Mtskheta)
Right Window Fragment on the West Façade of Svetitskhoveli Cathedral
3155
Creation Date: Carved and installed between 1010 and 1029 CE, under the direct royal patronage of King George I and Catholicos-Patriarch Melchisedek I, directed by the visionary architect Arsukidze. Period: The Golden Age of High Medieval Georgian Architecture (Eleventh-century unified Georgian Renaissance), characterized by monumental scale, mathematical proportioning, and an unprecedented mastery of complex, lace-like stone carving across exterior elevations.
Architectural Illumination and Symbolic Threshold: Functioned structurally to illuminate the western gallery/narthex area while serving as a primary theological threshold where the exterior secular world meets the sacred interior space. Theological and Cosmic Symbolism: The dense grapevine scrollwork (the True Vine) directly embodies Christ’s words ("I am the vine, you are the branches"), signifying spiritual nourishment, the Eucharist, and the paradisiacal abundance of the New Jerusalem adorning the western façade.
