Georgia (Mtskheta)
Radiating Archivolt and Tympanum Assembly at Svetitskhoveli Cathedral
3161
Creation Date: Carved and constructed between 1010 and 1029 CE, during the major rebuilding campaign of the cathedral under the patronage of Catholicos-Patriarch Melchisedek I and King George I. Period: The Golden Age of High Medieval Georgian Architecture (Eleventh-century unified Georgian Renaissance), an epoch distinguished by monumental architectural scale, perfected geometric proportioning systems, and virtuosic high-relief stone carving.
Apotropaic Portal Focus and Cosmic Threshold: Functioned as a monumental decorative lunette over church portals, marking the sacred boundary between the secular exterior world and the holy interior space. Theological and Cosmic Symbolism: The central rosette and radiating sunburst pattern symbolize Christ as the "Sun of Righteousness," divine light illuminating the cosmos, and the uncreated energies of God extending outward into creation.
