Post Office Savings Bank: Zsolnay Ceramic Dormer and Roof Ridge Detail
2518
Designed and constructed between 1899–1901 during the Hungarian Art Nouveau (Magyar Szecesszió) period, under the architectural direction of Ödön Lechner.
Structurally, the glazed Zsolnay ceramic dormers and ridge tiles protect the masonry and steel roof structure from frost, wind, and rain, while providing decorative articulation at the most visible upper zones of the building. Symbolically, the bee ornaments along the ridge reference civic industry and thrift — virtues central to the identity of a savings bank — while the folk-inspired tulip and floral reliefs assert a distinctly Hungarian national character.
