Portal Archivolts and Rosette Frieze at Samtavro Cathedral

3165

Creation Date: Constructed and carved in the first half of the eleventh century (specifically c. 1010–1030 CE), during the reign of King George I and the architectural revitalization led by Catholicos-Patriarch Melchisedek I. Period: The Golden Age of High Medieval Georgian Architecture (Eleventh-century unified Georgian Renaissance), an epoch celebrated for monumental exterior wall decoration, mathematical proportioning systems, and extraordinarily sophisticated stone-carving craftsmanship across ecclesiastical facades.

Architectural Framing and Sacred Threshold: Functioned structurally as an ornamental portal and window frame designed to mark the transition between the secular exterior and the sacred interior space of the cathedral. Theological and Cosmic Symbolism: The twisted rope mouldings symbolize eternity and unbreakable spiritual bonds, the beaded bands represent the infinite flow of divine time and grace, and the central circular rosettes embody divine creation, celestial order, and the uncreated light of Christ.
