Polychrome Cosmatesque and Spiral Relief Pilasters from the Façade of Orvieto Cathedral

2250

Italian Trecento, Early Renaissance / Late Gothic (14th Century), c. 1310–1330 CE

A detailed fragment of the decorative pilasters framing the relief piers on Orvieto Cathedral's western façade (c. 1310–1330 CE, Lorenzo Maitani) — alternating bands of Cosmatesque polychrome stone inlay (green quatrefoil rosettes, pink diamond lozenges within a white marble grid) alongside high-relief spiral-twisted torsade colonnettes and deeply undercut acanthus vine mouldings creating vibrant chiaroscuro in multi-colored white marble, basalt, and red limestone.
