Polychromatic Mosaic Turret and Pinnacle of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau by Lluís Domènech i Montaner
2074
High Catalan Modernisme, 1902–1930
A polychromatic mosaic turret and pinnacle from one of the pavilions of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau in Barcelona, designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner and constructed from 1902. The turret is octagonal in plan, rising from the pavilion corner through banded decorative zones of geometric ceramic mosaic in red, gold, cobalt blue, and white, with figurative ceramic reliefs set between the bands. The pinnacle above is assembled from stacked polychromatic stone and ceramic elements terminating in a gilded globe and cross. The turret surfaces carry Domènech’s characteristic integration of Mudejár geometric patterning, Romanesque figural relief, and Art Nouveau botanical detail within a single coherent ornamental system. Under sunlight, the glazed ceramic surfaces produce intense reflective brightness while the stone relief creates deep shadow contrasts.
