Polychromatic Façade and Balcony Fragment of Casa Batlló by Antoni Gaudí
2042
Catalan Modernisme (Art Nouveau), 1904–1906
The exterior façade and balcony fragment of Casa Batlló (1904–1906), designed by Antoni Gaudí for textile industrialist Josep Batlló. The entire surface undulates rhythmically like water, completely abandoning flat architectural planes in favor of biomorphic curves. Polychromatic trencadís mosaic — broken factory-waste ceramics set into mortar beds by Gaudí and collaborator Josep Maria Jujol — shifts from earthy yellow-gold at lower levels through deep oceanic blues and greens at the upper stories. Projecting cantilevered balconies feature organic skeletal frameworks of metallic-finished cast iron resembling bone structures or eye masks. Circular bottle-bottom glass roundels are embedded directly into the mosaic skin, acting as optical lenses that catch, refract, and scatter sunlight dynamically across the façade throughout the day.
