Pavillon Colbert (Musée du Louvre, Paris, France)
2898
Date: The architectural sculpture and the entire facade program of the pavilion were executed between 1857 and 1861 CE during the expansive second phase of the Louvre's unification under Emperor Napoleon III. Period: The French Second Empire period / Historicist Eclecticism / Neo-Baroque and Neo-Renaissance revival (mid-19th century).
Architectural Role: Functionally integrated as a load-bearing architectural support (human-form pier) that visually anchors the heavy entablature, while framing the monumental window bays and dividing the facade into rhythmic vertical spans. Symbolic, Cultural, and Imperial Purpose: Designed to project imperial grandeur, economic prosperity, agricultural abundance, and France's unbroken artistic continuity from classical antiquity through the Renaissance and the reign of Louis XIV.
