Párisi Udvar: Polychrome Glazed Tile Arch Spandrel and Frieze Close-Up
2529
Designed and constructed between 1909–1913 during the Hungarian Historicist Orientalist Revival period, under Henrik Schmahl.
Structurally, the glazed ceramic tile spandrel panels protect the masonry arch shoulders from moisture penetration. Symbolically, the dense geometric tile patterns of the spandrel evoke the great decorative tradition of Islamic architecture — zellij tilework, Iznik faience, and Alhambra stucco — transposing the cultural prestige of Islamic palace interiors into a Budapest commercial arcade.
