Párisi Udvar (Paris Arcade): Islamic-Moorish Glazed Tile Atrium and Vaulted Arcade
2528
Designed and constructed between 1909–1913 during the Hungarian Historicist and early Art Nouveau Orientalist Revival period, under the architectural direction of Henrik Schmahl.
Structurally, the iron-and-glass barrel vault roof protects the arcade from weather while maintaining abundant natural light throughout the day. Symbolically, the extravagant Moorish-Orientalist interior is a declaration of cosmopolitan aspiration: the 'Paris Arcade' name, Moorish arches, and glittering polychrome tile surfaces position Budapest's commercial culture in dialogue with the most fashionable European shopping galleries and Oriental palace interiors.
