Organic Portal with Carved Timber and Stained Glass of Casa Calvet by Antoni Gaudí
2071
Early Catalan Modernisme, Baroque revival phase, 1898–1900
The main entrance portal of Casa Calvet in Barcelona, designed by Antoni Gaudí and completed 1898–1900. A pair of deeply carved timber doors is set within a stone surround flanked by baroque twisted colonettes and crowned with carved floral keystones. The timber door surfaces are covered with interlocking botanical relief in high relief — curling foliage, stylized floral forms, and organic volumetric masses — giving each door panel a deeply textured, tactile surface. The upper transom is glazed with leaded stained glass roundels in amber and viridian, admitting filtered colored light into the vestibule. The stone surround's carved elements integrate with the timber door relief to create a portal in which stone and wood speak the same formal language. The deep undercutting of the carved timber produces intense chiaroscuro within the door surface, with projecting foliage casting sharp shadows against the recessed ground.
