2888
Date: The lower structural masonry core dates back to 1427–1467 CE, while the iconic timber-framed upper storeys and the intricate carved wooden facade panels shown in this fragment were completed in 1589 CE under the direction of the merchant Martin Braun. Period: The Late Renaissance and Northern Mannerism period within the Germanic and Alsatian architectural tradition (late 16th century).
Architectural Role: Acts as an exterior structural spandrel and decorative timber brace between window levels, distributing structural loads while establishing the rhythmic, grid-like composition of the multi-story half-timbered facade. Symbolic, Cultural, and Civic Purpose: The inclusion of musical motifs and allegorical figures served as an architectural celebration of harmony, arts, and humanist learning, advertising the refined cultural aspirations and civic prestige of the prosperous merchant owner.
