Musical Putto and Ornamental Panel of Maison Kammerzell (Strasbourg)

2885

Date: The lower masonry elements of the building date back to 1427–1467 CE, while the iconic timber-framed upper storeys and the intricate carved wooden panels shown in this fragment were completed in 1589 CE under the supervision of the merchant Martin Braun. Period: Late Renaissance / Northern Mannerism within the Germanic and Alsatian architectural tradition (late 16th century).

Architectural Role: Served as structural corner posts and ornamental spandrel infills framing the upper-floor leaded glass windows (bullseye glass panes), distributing upper-level weight while enriching the rhythm of the multi-story timber facade. Symbolic, Musical, and Humanist Purpose: The inclusion of musical instruments like the viola da gamba alongside allegorical putti symbolized harmony, civic culture, liberal arts, and the refined humanist education of the prosperous burgher merchant class in the Free Imperial City of Strasbourg.
