Museum of Applied Arts Budapest: Zsolnay Tiled Dome and Majolica Facade

2521

Designed and constructed between 1893–1896 during the Hungarian Art Nouveau (Magyar Szecesszió) period, under the architectural direction of Ödön Lechner and Gyula Pártos.

Structurally, the dense majolica cladding protects the masonry exterior from moisture penetration, while the glazed ceramic dome tiles shed rainfall efficiently. Symbolically, the dazzling white exterior and colorful dome represent the building's mission as a temple of applied arts and craftsmanship, celebrating the synthesis of fine art and industrial production.
