Museum of Applied Arts Budapest: Interior Atrium and Moorish-Gothic Glass Roof
2522
Designed and completed between 1893–1896 during the Hungarian Art Nouveau (Magyar Szecesszió) period, under the architectural direction of Ödön Lechner and Gyula Pártos.
Structurally, the glass-and-iron roof floods the deep atrium with natural zenithal light essential for examining decorative art objects. Symbolically, the Moorish-Gothic-Art Nouveau hybrid atrium positions Hungary within a global artistic lineage — from medieval Islamic craft traditions to contemporary European applied arts — proclaiming Budapest a peer to Vienna, Paris, and London in cultural sophistication.
