Multi-Order Chevron and Geometric Roll Archway, Southwell Minster

2135

High Romanesque / Anglo-Norman, c. 1120–1140

A multi-layered architectural masonry archway from Southwell Minster, carved c. 1120–1140, featuring deeply recessed radiating voussoirs with multi-ordered archivolts, multi-order jamb shafts, sculpted cushion capitals, and heavily patterned horizontal abaci. The portal is organized into distinct receding planes, where each successive concentric archivolt is aggressively decorated with continuous geometric programs — alternating between heavy three-dimensional roll moldings and multi-layered zigzag chevron patterns. The chevrons are cut directly into the voussoir blocks using broad chisels and gouges to produce repeating V-shaped grooves and projecting ridges across the full semicircle of each arch. Supporting capitals below deploy stylized cushion and fluted leaf designs, crowned by flat abaci with continuous triangular chip-carved billet and diamond patterns. Because the chevron zig-zags plunge deeply into alternating grooves and project in bold ridges, ambient light catches the prominent edges while casting deep shadows in the recesses, producing a striking high-contrast chiaroscuro rhythm that animates the massive stone archway with intense visual vibration.
