Mosaic Inlaid and Carved Columns of the Monreale Cloister

2465

Constructed circa 1172–1189 CE under the patronage of King William II of Sicily. Period: Sicilian Norman / Romanesque with Byzantine and Islamic synthesis (Late 12th Century).

This image captures paired cloister columns at the Cathedral of Monreale featuring exquisitely carved white marble shafts richly inlaid with polychrome glass and stone mosaic tesserae in spiraling and geometric patterns. The columns support carved Romanesque capitals adorned with gilded mosaic grounds and narrative sculptural reliefs, all executed in the Sicilian Norman workshop tradition that fused Byzantine mosaic craft, Islamic geometric ornament, and Western Romanesque stone carving.
