Mosaic and Inlaid Columns of Salerno Cathedral
2456
Created approximately between 1150 and 1182 CE (coinciding with the high-medieval campaign of liturgical furnishings under Archbishop Romualdo II Guarna and Norman patronage). Period: High Middle Ages / Campania-Norman Romanesque Period (12th Century).
This image captures an architectural fragment of a compound medieval column featuring a composite Corinthian capital, a bulbous annular drum (echinus/torus band), and cylindrical shafts ornamented with intricate geometric micro-mosaic bands and chevrons. It is crafted from white marble embedded with hand-cut glass paste, gold-leaf mosaic tesserae, red porphyry, green serpentine, and colored stones, executed through precise channel-cutting, stone inlay (opus sectile), turning, and micro-mosaic assembly (opus tessellatum).
