Monumental Stone Rosette Relief of Nikortsminda Cathedral: Stylistic and Historical Analysis
2809
Creation Date: 1010–1014 CE (constructed and sculpted under the direct royal patronage of King Bagrat III). Period: High Medieval Period / Golden Age of Georgian Architectural Sculpture (11th Century).
Architectural and Cosmic Symbolism: Positioned on the exterior walls of the cathedral, this grand rosette served both structural window framing and deep theological functions. In medieval Christian symbolism, the circular wheel-rosette represents the sun of righteousness, the eternity of the cosmos, the eye of providence, and spiritual perfection. Apotropaic Protection: The dense, unbroken continuity of the concentric foliate and rope moldings functioned as an apotropaic charm, symbolically sealing the architectural openings against malevolent spiritual forces and marking the sanctuary as a sacred cosmological center.
