Michaelis Church (Hildesheim): Choir Screen Chancel Balustrade Detail with Foliate Scrolls, Interlacing Semicircles, and Avian-Hybrid Frieze

2539

Created during the 11th–12th century Romanesque period, associated with the foundational artistic tradition of Hildesheim under Bishop Bernward.

Architecturally, this decorative frieze forms the horizontal base and framing register of the western choir screen enclosure, separating the sacred precinct of the clergy from the main nave. Theologically and symbolically, the interconnected vine scrolls, birds, and hybrid creatures functioned as visual allegories of Paradise, the Tree of Life, and the soul's nourishment through Christian sacraments.
