Medieval Ceiling and Rib Paintings of Spånga Church
2472
Created circa 1440s–1450s CE (with foundational structural ornamentation dating to the late 14th-century nave vaulting phases). Period: Late Middle Ages / Swedish Medieval Gothic Period (15th Century).
This image captures an architectural vault section displaying figurative roundels (such as the Symbol of Saint Matthew), sprawling botanical tendrils, and a lower register depicting a lion attacking its prey. It is crafted from lime plaster applied over medieval stone and brick masonry, painted with natural earth and mineral pigments (including carbon blacks, red and yellow ochres, and lime-resistant greens) bound in a traditional lime-milk medium, executed using fresco-secco wall-painting techniques.
