Matthias Church: Polychrome Zsolnay Tile Roof Pattern Close-Up
2512
Created between 1873–1896 during the Austro-Hungarian Historicist and Neo-Gothic restoration period, under the direction of architect Frigyes Schulek.
Structurally, the interlocking tiles form a waterproof, highly durable outer skin capable of withstanding severe Central European weather while snow-holding metal anchors prevent avalanches from sliding off the steep roof pitch. Symbolically, the vibrant geometric tapestry translates traditional Hungarian folk art motifs into monumental civic architecture, celebrating national heritage during the Austro-Hungarian golden age.
