Matthias Church: Polychrome Tiled Roof and Neo-Gothic Spires
2513
Designed and executed between 1873–1896 during the Austro-Hungarian Historicist and Neo-Gothic restoration period (building foundations dating back to the 13th–15th centuries).
Structurally, the steeply sloped tiled roof sheds heavy snow and rain while protecting the vaulted Gothic interior below, and the stone spires and pinnacles anchor the vertical thrust of the architecture. Symbolically, the vibrant Zsolnay ceramic roof celebrates Hungarian national Romanticism, transforming a historic coronation church into an iconic civic landmark.
