Matthias Church: Polychrome Glazed Roof Tiles and Gothic Apse
2511
Designed and restored between 1873–1896 during the Austro-Hungarian Historicist and Neo-Gothic restoration period, under the direction of architect Frigyes Schulek (on medieval foundations dating back to the 13th–15th centuries).
Structurally, the steeply pitched tiled roof sheds heavy snow and rainfall while protecting the vaulted Gothic interior below; the flying buttresses and stone pinnacles distribute vertical and lateral roof loads. Symbolically, the brilliant polychrome Zsolnay tiling reflects late 19th-century Hungarian Romanticism and national revival, transforming a medieval royal sanctuary into a vibrant symbol of Budapest's architectural heritage.
