Marine Style Ewer from Palaikastro (Heraklion Archaeological Museum)
2432
Created during the Minoan civilization, specifically within the Late Minoan period, specifically Late Minoan IB (approximately 1500–1450 BCE).
This object is a complete, piriform ceramic ewer (pitcher with a pinched spout and a high-slung handle) fashioned from fine Cretan terracotta and decorated in the iconic Marine Style. The technique features dark-brown to black painted motifs applied directly over a light buff or cream slip background, capturing a fluid, naturalistic undersea composition that wraps seamlessly around the vessel's bulbous body.
