Man Among Vine Foliage and Grapes, Chapter House of Southwell Minster

2124

Decorated English Gothic, c. 1288–1295

An integrated architectural stone frieze sculpture from the Chapter House of Southwell Minster, carved c. 1288–1295, featuring a human figure organically embedded within a continuous flowing scrollwork of grapevine foliage. The figure is centrally positioned within the horizontal architectural molding, its body and limbs weaving through deeply lobed grapevine leaves and heavy clusters of dangling grapes. The vine scrollwork flows unbroken along the molding, creating a continuous rhythmic narrative of foliage and human interaction. Individual facial features, hair strands, and fabric folds are delicately articulated, paired with meticulously textured grape skins and serrated, veined vine leaves. Grapes, vine tendrils, and the figure’s limbs are dramatically undercut — leaving profound gaps of open space and shadow behind the carved stone — projecting far forward from the architectural backdrop and generating striking chiaroscuro contrasts under natural and ambient light.
