Maison Carrée: Portico Coffered Ceiling (Lacunaria) and Corinthian Colonnade

2502

Commissioned circa 19 BCE by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa and re-dedicated circa 2–5 CE during the Early Roman Empire period under Emperor Augustus.

This image captures an upward perspective of the temple's monumental portico ceiling, consisting of deeply recessed square coffers (lacunaria) framing intricate circular floral rosettes, supported by Corinthian columns. It is carved from regional limestone, executed using precision stereotomy (stone-cutting), chisel work, and high-relief carving with fine drillwork (sottosquadro).
