Maison Carrée: Entablature and Cornice Details
2498
Created in the Early Roman Empire period, circa 2–5 CE, during the reign of Emperor Augustus.
This image captures a detailed section of the temple's entablature, comprising the dentil course, richly carved modillions (brackets) interspersed with floral rosettes, a Greek fret (meander) frieze, and a centered lion-head waterspout (gargoyle). It is carved from regional limestone, executed using precision chisel cutting, fine drillwork (sottosquadro) for deep shadow contrast, and high-relief stone carving.
