Lion-Skin Headdress, Mane, and Ornate Sandal Detail from the Pergamon Altar Frieze

2246

Hellenistic Period, Attalid Dynasty (2nd Century BCE), c. 166–156 BCE

A monumental ultra-high-relief marble fragment from the Pergamon Altar Gigantomachy frieze (c. 166–156 BCE) showing a lion-skin headdress, cascading beast mane, and an elaborately ornamental military boot — all three surfaces systematically transformed into rhythmic abstract ornament through parallel-grooved tiers, corkscrew ringlets, and metalwork-like incised scrollwork on the boot shaft.
