Kore from Chios (Acropolis Museum)

3106

Date Created: Circa 520–510 BCE. Period: The Late Archaic Period (circa 530–500 BCE). This era marks the height of Ionian influence on Attic sculpture, characterized by exquisite textile rendering, asymmetrical drapery compositions, refined facial softness, and rich polychromy.

Votive Offering (Agalma): Functionally, the statue served as a sacred votive offering (agalma) dedicated to the goddess Athena on the Acropolis by a wealthy citizen. Representation of Ionian Luxury and Aristocratic Refinement: The luxurious garments, elaborate jewelry, and sophisticated hairstyle symbolized the high social status, cosmopolitan elegance, and religious devotion of the elite class during the late sixth century BCE.
