Kedleston Hall: South Facade Relief Medallion and Festoon Detail
2871
Date: 1759–1765 CE. Period: The Georgian Era / British Neoclassicism (the Palladian Revival and early Neoclassical movement).
Architectural Role: Integrated into the upper wall register of the central triumphal arch motif on the south facade, breaking up the massive stone expanse with rhythmic sculptural accents. Symbolic and Political Purpose: Serves as an emblem of elite classical erudition. By embedding authentic Roman mythological motifs and delicate archaeological ornament into an English country house, the patron (Sir Nathaniel Curzon) and architect (Robert Adam) signaled their deep engagement with the Grand Tour and the rebirth of Augustan taste in Britain.
