Jerónimos Monastery (Lisbon): Upper Cloister Balustrade, Twisted Pinnacles, and Medallion Frieze
2563
Designed and commenced in the early 16th century by Diogo de Boitaca, continued by João de Castilho from 1517 onwards, and finally completed in 1540–1541 by Diogo de Torralva, during the Manueline (Portuguese Late Gothic / Renaissance Transitional) period.
Architecturally, this decorated parapet caps the upper gallery level, concealing the roof structure while adding vertical rhythm to the courtyard silhouette. Symbolically, the combination of classical Roman-style portrait medallions (tondi) with medieval grotesques and twisting nautical pinnacles illustrates the transitional synthesis of Renaissance humanism and Portuguese maritime symbolism.
