Jerónimos Monastery (Lisbon): Upper Cloister Arcade, Traceried Ogee Arches, and Studded Pier Detail
2564
Designed and commenced in the early 16th century by Diogo de Boitaca, continued by João de Castilho from 1517 onwards, and finally completed in 1540–1541 by Diogo de Torralva, during the Manueline (Portuguese Late Gothic / Renaissance Transitional) period.
Architecturally, this arcade gallery provides a shaded, contemplative walkway for the monastic community while framing views of the central courtyard. Symbolically, the intricate openwork stone tracery and rich sculptural detailing reflect the harmonious union of divine devotion, royal patronage, and maritime exploration.
