Jerónimos Monastery (Lisbon): Upper Balustrade Cross of the Order of Christ and Lower Arcade Gallery

2566

Designed and commenced in the early 16th century by Diogo de Boitaca, continued by João de Castilho from 1517 onwards, and finally completed between 1540 and 1541 by Diogo de Torralva, during the Manueline (Portuguese Late Gothic / Renaissance Transitional) period.

Architecturally, this structure forms part of the two-storey cloister designed to create a sense of isolation for the monastic community, serving as a contemplative, serene place for prayer, meditation, and leisure for the monks of the Hieronymite Order. Symbolically, the inclusion of the Cross of the Order of Christ highlights royal patronage and the spiritual-imperial mission of Portuguese maritime exploration.
