Jerónimos Monastery (Lisbon): South Portal Upper Balustrade and Finial Detail
2545
Designed and constructed in the early 16th century (circa 1516–1540) during the Portuguese Manueline period, attributed to João de Castilho.
Structurally, the pierced tracery balustrades and clustered pinnacles crown the upper gable of the South Portal, concealing the roof structure while providing dramatic decorative vertical termination. Symbolically, the armillary sphere finials — the personal emblem of King Manuel I — celebrate Portugal's global maritime empire and the monarch's identity as sovereign of the seas.
