Jerónimos Monastery (Lisbon): South Portal Tympanum Arch, Angelic Spandrels, and Flamboyant Archivolts
2557
Built between 1516 and 1518 by master architect João de Castilho and his workshop, following initial design concepts by Diogo de Boitaca, during the height of the Manueline (Portuguese Late Gothic / Renaissance Transitional) period.
Architecturally, this arched assembly frames the upper clerestory opening while distributing the structural load of the portal's upper tiers. Symbolically, the descending angels and fantastical creatures represent celestial messengers bridging the divine and earthly realms.
