Jerónimos Monastery (Lisbon): South Portal Ogee Arch, Canopy Capital, and Foliate Spandrels
2558
Built between 1516 and 1518 by master architect João de Castilho and his workshop, following initial design concepts by Diogo de Boitaca, during the height of the Manueline (Portuguese Late Gothic / Renaissance Transitional) period.
Architecturally, this ogee framework creates a decorative canopy and structural transition beneath the upper saintly statues. Symbolically, the exuberant foliate scrolls and naturalistic stone detailing represent the organic flourishing of divine creation and earthly royalty.
