Jerónimos Monastery (Lisbon): South Portal Miniature Consoles, Hanging Balustrades, and Sculptural Relief Detail
2561
Built between 1516 and 1518 by master architect João de Castilho and his workshop, following initial design concepts by Diogo de Boitaca, during the height of the Manueline (Portuguese Late Gothic / Renaissance Transitional) period.
Architecturally, these hanging consoles and miniature balustrades serve as structural pedestals and decorative corbels that support the weight of the outer statues and archivolts. Symbolically, the intricate stone lacework and botanical motifs represent the fusion of structural engineering with divine floral symbolism.
