Jerónimos Monastery (Lisbon): South Portal Micro-Architectural Pinnacle and Pierced Tracery Detail

2547

Designed and constructed in the early 16th century (circa 1516–1540) during the Portuguese Manueline period, attributed to João de Castilho.

Structurally, the clustered pinnacle buttresses absorb and redirect the lateral thrust of the portal arch and gable stonework, functioning as essential load-bearing elements disguised as decorative micro-architectural compositions. Symbolically, the armillary sphere finials and layered micro-architectural niches encode the spiritual aspiration of Gothic verticality with the maritime imperial ambition of Manueline Portugal.
