Jerónimos Monastery (Lisbon): South Portal Lintel, Medallion, and Rosette Frieze Detail
2551
Built between 1516 and 1518 by master architect João de Castilho and his workshop, following initial design concepts by Diogo de Boitaca, during the height of the Manueline (Portuguese Late Gothic / Renaissance Transitional) period.
Architecturally, this lintel assembly bridges the transition between the functional double doors and the soaring narrative iconography above. Symbolically, the fusion of traditional rosettes with classical human profiles (all'antica) reflected the growing influence of Italian Renaissance humanism under royal patronage while maintaining indigenous Manueline decorative richness.
