Jerónimos Monastery (Lisbon): South Portal Horizontal Frieze, Corbel Table, and Cable Molding Detail
2549
Designed and constructed in the early 16th century (circa 1516–1540) during the Portuguese Manueline period, attributed to João de Castilho.
Architecturally, the corbel table and horizontal frieze mark a structural and visual transition zone across the portal facade, historically functioning to support projecting upper wall masses while decoratively dividing the elevation into distinct horizontal registers. Symbolically, the continuous rope molding running unbroken across the entire frieze zone represents the nautical cables of Portuguese ships.
