Jerónimos Monastery (Lisbon): South Portal Foliate Relief, Twisted Cordage, and Pierced Tracery Detail

2548

Designed and constructed in the early 16th century (circa 1516–1540) during the Portuguese Manueline period, attributed to João de Castilho.

Architecturally, these archivolt moldings and spandrel zones frame the primary arch of the portal, structurally and decoratively defining the threshold transition between exterior and interior. Symbolically, the intertwined rope moldings, coral branches, and foliate scrolls embed the maritime world of Portuguese exploration directly into the sacred fabric of the monastery portal.
