Jerónimos Monastery (Lisbon): South Portal Archivolt, Rosette Frieze, and Pinnacle Figural Detail
2552
Built between 1516 and 1518 by master architect João de Castilho and his workshop, during the height of the Manueline (Portuguese Late Gothic / Renaissance Transitional) period.
Architecturally, these concentric archivolts guide the eye upward along the portal's curved structural depth while housing repetitive sacred motifs. Symbolically, the blossoming rosette bands and guardian figures manifest the celestial hierarchies and eternal paradise under divine protection.
