Jerónimos Monastery (Lisbon): Pier Detail with Candelabra Pilaster and Twisted Colonnettes
2567
Designed and commenced in the early 16th century by Diogo de Boitaca, continued by João de Castilho from 1517 onwards, and finally completed between 1540 and 1541 by Diogo de Torralva, during the Manueline (Portuguese Late Gothic / Renaissance Transitional) period.
Architecturally, this structure supports the vaulted gallery system designed to create a sense of isolation for the monastic community, serving as a contemplative, serene place for prayer, meditation, and leisure for the monks of the Hieronymite Order. Symbolically, the fusion of classical Italianate candelabra motifs with indigenous nautical cordage reflects the opening of Portuguese art to Renaissance influences during the Age of Discovery.
